Qt was created with the idea of removing this boilerplate code and providing a nice and clean syntax, and the signal and slots mechanism is the answer. Signals and slots Instead of having observable objects and observers, and registering them, Qt provides two high level concepts: signals and slots. Qt signals and slots observer pattern. Signals and slots is a language construct introduced in Qt, which makes it easy to implement the Observer pattern while avoiding boilerplate code. The concept is that controls (also known as widgets) can send signals containing event information which can be received by other controls using special functions known as slots. Whats the point of the observer pattern/signals and slots? From what I can gather, the observer pattern is just some container (the subject) of some data type (an observer). Years ago I learnt about the observer pattern, where we usually have some class (the subject) which is observed by some observer. The observers register to the subject, and if the subject does some action, e.g., sets some new value, it notifies the observers.
